Report of Optical project from Mr. Pumbwa Drucken
Report of Optical project

My Experience:

I have stayed with the organization for two years now. During all the time I have stayed in the organization I use my motto “to learn and change” which I am happy to be what I am now doing working in a field which is not common in Malawi. The organization helped me financially and in kind for my family support and just recently you have bought me a Refraction Training Manual from UK. All this is to make things easier and my work performance more efficient. Work relationship with Uli is good on everyday programs and even the possibility of expanding the project to other areas has been our talk. People are really appreciating the services we are offering at low prices comparing to the really business orientated optical centres in the big citys. I am a bit sad that I am still working without any certificate I hope the charity is sending me soon to school to have an official certificate.

Our stock of items:

Currently we have high stock of second hand glasses, frames in different sizes and new lenses. This is making us to expand our catchment area of customers. We are planning to establish Vision Centres at already existing Health Centres to give people which can not afford to travel to our Optical Centre access to glasses. Therefore I am bringing to your attention to look also on logistics to these Vision Centres. I also suggest to develop a hand book where you outline how records have to be kept, operational guidelines, storeroom procedures, staff job descriptions, administrative requirements and monitoring checklist . This will help us here to order materials in time, stocktaking to be done efficiently and if other stakeholders or relevant organizations are seeking information pertaining our work could be easily done.

Marketing:

This is another very important stage if we are to achieve our goal of reaching poor people to acquire the glasses. In my observation there is still a majority of people who don't know where to get spectacles and can not afford to travel to a location where spectacles could be obtained.

As we look at these people who have refractive errors we should not see them just as patients but  they are also our customers and we have to treat them like this. Our customers must be satisfied with the service, the product and the result. This will take our name to every home.

Planning:

We have put in place the following mechanisms to sensitize the community:

    * Local radio station

If funds available I'd like to set a program about our project.

    * School eye examination

We wish to visit Secondary Schools for health talk about eyes and examine those who feel they have problems with their vision

    * Vision Centres

We have to discuss with the Administrator and the District Health Officer of Nkhotakota District Hospital because they are responsible for most of the Health Centres in the District. There are also seperate Hospitals named Alinafe Rural Hospital and Matiki Health Centre under Dwangwa Sugar Company which have a good number of people around them.

Lets all work hand in hand in accomplishing the goals of reaching poor masses to acquire glasses at a cheap price to correct their refractive errors so that they take part in developing our world. Wishing you all the best during your executive meeting.
